📷🗂️Your life is about to get easier, [FIRST NAME GOES HERE]

Dear Reader,

As promised, we're going to talk about the abundance of photos on your computer. I know it can be super overwhelming and I’m sure we've all been there. Here's what I do to get AND keep things under control:

  1. Organize into folders: Start by setting up a folder system that makes sense to you. For example, my folder hierarchy starts with the big overarching theme of the folder, like Travel, Clients, and Projects. Then, within each, I add subfolders by date and/or event, like 2024 Bali. This works for me, but it may be different for you. Take some time to think about this and consider the different areas of interest in your photography. Decide for the long term, you don’t want to change your structure in a few years.
  2. Cull unnecessary photos: Let's be real, we all have a ton of random, blurry, or duplicate photos that are just taking up space. I used to go through my folders every once in a while and delete anything that wasn't worth keeping. But since I started teaching, I don't do that anymore 😉 Mistakes are an excellent way to make a point. But for you, that doesn’t make sense. So clear up some space by deleting all the failed photos.
  3. Rate and select: Even if you banish all your failures to the dark dungeons of the Internet, chances are not every shot you take is worth editing and sharing. I have an elaborate rating system to select the shots I really love. Scroll further down for a post on how to do this!
  4. Back up regularly: This is a no-brainer for me, but unfortunately, I hear stories all the time from family, friends, and even clients about losing everything because their computer had a meltdown. Don't let that happen to you! You don't want to lose those precious memories. I'm actually old school when it comes to backups. I prefer an external hard drive, in fact, I have several 😉 But cloud storage works just as well. Of course, you can also do both.
  5. Regular maintenance: The trick to keeping everything organized is regular check-ins. For me, it's a given because I'm in my Lightroom library a lot. But I imagine it's different for you. You might decide to set a reminder every few months to go through your latest photos, clean things up, and make sure your folders are still in order. As we all know, it's a lot easier to stay on top of things than to deal with a huge mess later on!

Rate & Select

Trust me Reader, once you get a system in place, it feels so much better knowing all your photos are organized and safe. You’ve got this!

Enjoy your weekend...

Happy Photographing!
