🎨 Ready to Take Control of Your Colors? Let’s Dive In!

Happy Friday Reader,

Today's newsletter is all about White Balance and Color Temperature since that's the topic you voted for in our poll two weeks ago.

So over the coming weeks, I'll break down this important topic in a way that's easy to understand and even easier to apply to your photography. Ready to dive in and improve your skills? Let's get started!

Part 1 (of 3): Color Temperature

To understand white balance, you first need to understand color temperature. Have you ever noticed how some photos seem off, maybe a little too yellow or blue? That's the magic (or mischief) of color temperature at work.

What is Color Temperature?

In photography, color temperature refers to the color of light. Every light source, from the gentle glow of a candle to the brilliant midday sun, has its own color temperature. We measure it in degrees Kelvin, and it affects how colors appear in your photos.

Think of it this way:

  • Warm light (like candlelight) has a yellow-orange hue, around 1000–2000 Kelvin.
  • Cool light (like a clear blue sky) is blue, around 10,000 Kelvin.
  • And right in the middle is neutral light, about 5600 Kelvin, where the light doesn’t lean too much toward warm or cool.

The tricky part is that, although the color temperature around you changes constantly, you don’t notice it. That’s because your brain compensates for all the different color temperatures around you. It acts like a little artist, adding yellow here and blue there. But your camera? It doesn’t have that magic—at least, not by itself.

Why Does It Matter?

Color temperature is everywhere. It’s in the cozy warmth of a sunset, the crispness of a snowy morning, and the soft glow of indoor lighting. By understanding color temperature, you can avoid those unwanted color casts in your photos.

Next time, we’ll explore how to balance these color temperatures with your camera’s white balance settings. You’ve got this! Stay tuned for Part 2.
